Who We Are and What We Do

There is a Swahili proverb that says Kidogo kidogo ndio mwendo, which essentially means “Little by little gets you there.”

Just as children learn to walk step by step, and learn to speak sound by sound and word by word, they learn to read word by word and page by page. 
 

PAGE BY PAGE – MOMBASA is a nonprofit organization formed by group of teachers, former teachers and nurses – several of whom are originally from Mombasa, Kenya – who are passionate and dedicated to promoting and fostering a culture of reading and lifetime learning in the children of Mombasa. Other friends of PAGE BY PAGE – MOMBASA have also enthusiastically joined us in this worthy cause.

Over the years we have witnessed a decline in reading skills in Mombasa youth and a scarcity of non-core curriculum supplemental reading books at all grade levels. PAGE BY PAGE – MOMBASA hopes to fill this void by donating books and educational supplies to local Mombasa schools and community libraries, and providing free mentoring services to Mombasa teachers looking to improve their own teaching skills, especially in regards to reading.

We are starting out small, and at this time we are focusing on providing books to lower elementary school students. As we grow, we will expand our donations and services to upper school levels. We will also purchase books from local booksellers to help the local economy. Again, Kidogo kidogo ndio mwendo; “Little by little gets you there.

We sincerely believe that reading is the key to all learning! If we can help students establish strong reading skills and an actual love of reading in the early grade levels, it will surely contribute to their future academic capabilities and success.

We truly believe that Reading Opens Doors to further knowledge and opportunities. Hence our logo, which depicts a traditional hand-carved Mombasa wooden door opening onto a world of books. We want to help students maintain their traditional culture while opening them up to the world of books and the increased opportunities that a good education provides. For us, a good education is grounded in strong reading skills, and an actual love of reading and lifetime learning.
